Geosyntec Provides Superior Services for Solid Waste
Disposal Facility Owners and Operators

Geosyntec designed a 20-year expansion for the Cherry Island Landfill: one of the most technically complex recent geotechnical engineering projects in North America.

Delivering on the Promise of Innovation

Geosyntec is recognized as a leader in helping our clients achieve safe, secure containment of their regulated wastes requiring land disposal. We provide engineering and related services for siting, permitting, design, construction management and quality assurance, environmental monitoring, closure and post-closure care. Our Waste Containment Facility Planning and Design practice focuses on waste treatment, containment, redevelopment and reuse systems.

Geosyntec develops innovative applications of conventional and advanced technologies that directly address the capacity, compliance, and economic challenges of the waste disposal industry.

Waste Containment Facility Planning and Design

Geosyntec provides a wide range of services including analysis, design, permitting, and construction engineering for landfill gas management and related air quality issues.

Landfill Gas Management, Air Permitting, and Compliance Services

Geosyntec designed the gas management and performed a post-closure evaluation of the gas management for the final landfill closure system.

Geosyntec's evaluation of landfill gas generation indicated that a passive gas management was appropriate, and designed a system consisting of a geocomposite gas collection layer and shallow passive gas vents. Geosyntec per- formed a post-closure performance evaluation including a Tier 2 NMOC analysis to confirm the effectiveness of the passive gas management. Results of the post-closure evaluation indicated that the system was appropriate and effective.

Waste Containment Facility Planning and Design

As one of the first firms to promote and apply soil reinforcement technology to landfill design, Geosyntec developed many of the design techniques currently used for MSE walls at landfills.

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls

Vertical expansion of landfills can be a very cost-effective method of adding significant amounts of disposal capacity, particularly when lateral expansion is not feasible for one reason or another. This additional capacity can be a financial boon to the facility’s owner/operator. One of the best ways to take advantage of the facility’s existing footprint is to expand vertically by the use of properly designed and constructed mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls.

MSE walls consist of a geosynthetic material layered with compacted earth. Easily constructed and highly durable, these walls are inexpensive when compared with other more traditional wall materials, and can tolerate differential settlement, which is a significant advantage over the rigidity of concrete walls.

Practice Literature

Just as we are committed to helping our clients achieve safe, secure containment of their regulated wastes requiring land disposal, Geosyntec is also committed to reduciing the environmental, economic, and social impacts associated with paper conference literature.

This is the latest example of our “going green” process to reduce conference paper. We’ve created this web page and the linked pdfs of our technologies and practices information to help reduce our consumption of natural resources.
