Post Fukushima Nuclear Plant Services

Evaluating Seismic, Flooding, and Other Hazards at Nuclear Power Plants

Geosyntec provides nuclear plant licensees with applied scientific and engineering services to manage risk from seismic, flooding, and other extreme events.

Geosyntec was retained by Pacific Gas and Electric to perform Senior Seismic Hazard Analysis Committee (SSHAC) Level 3 Seismic Hazard Update for the Diablo Canyon Power Plant

Seismic, Flood, and Extreme Hazard Evaluation for Nuclear Plants

The accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant prompted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop criteria for reactor licensees to re-evaluate hazards at their sites. Our capabilities in nuclear plant seismic, flooding analysis, and man-made hazard evaluation enable our clients to provide stakeholders with assurance of safe and continued operations during extreme events.

Our Experience Benefits Your Project Results

We can quickly mobilize experienced professionals in many specialty areas including:

  • Geotechnical and environmental services
  • Seismic and ground motion analysis
  • Projectile impact analysis or accidental heavy load drop
  • Flood evaluation and analysis of response to hydrodynamic loads
  • Fatigue analysis of reactor or steam generator components
  • Containment structural integrity assessment
  • Assessment of internal hazards such as fires and explosions
Turning Disaster Into Knowledge

It is vital to quickly look at the results of seismic, flooding, and other extreme events before cleanup occurs and perishable data are lost. That's why our expert practitioners are among the first on the ground after extreme events such as the earthquake and tsunami that affected the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. Geosyntec Geotechnical Specialist Jennifer Donahue, as part of the quick-response National Science Foundation-Sponsored Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Team, visited the Kanto Plain Region of Japan shortly after the earthquake to examine and collect data on the effects of the disaster.
