Environmental Liability Valuation (ELV)

Building upon our renowned expertise in environmental remediation, geotechnical, water resources, and infrastructure risk engineering, Geosyntec provides public and private sector clients with defensible valuation of environmental liability to support business decisions, such as those pertaining to insurance transactions, risk transfer, financial reporting, and portfolio management.

Geosyntec provided environmental liability valuation for an industrial parts manufacturer site portfolio. We successfully negotiated settlements with multiple insurance carriers amounting to millions of dollars in insurance recoveries.

Environmental Liability Valuation (ELV) and Portfolio Management Services

We help clients manage risk while meeting their organizational goals for environmental stewardship and financial management.

When ELV matters to the bottom line, corporate management and legal counsel seek out Geosyntec to provide technical analysis, consulting support, and expert testimony. They know that Geosyntec offers a unique set of qualifications to apply fundamental environmental engineering and scientific analyses within a financial, legal, and risk management framework inherent to key business decisions, negotiations, and disputes. This provides our clients greater cost certainty and more usable valuations. For example, Geosyntec:

  • Focuses on complex environmental liability portfolios. We provided concurrent evaluation of environmental liabilities at more than 1,000 sites in 48 states and international locations with alleged environmental liabilities in the billions of dollars.
  • Focuses on environmental risk management. We provided the technical basis for a greater than $30 million insurance recovery to a clients' bottom line in less than 18 months from project inception.
  • Offers unique environmental costing tools. We have developed and employed costing techniques and models specific to the intricacies of environmental valuations.
  • Provides expert support. Our experts have consulted and opined on approaches, magnitudes, and appropriateness of environmental costs for more than 10,000 sites worldwide, representing billions of dollars of alleged environmental liabilities.
Environmental Liability Valuation and Portfolio Management Services

Geosyntec has evaluated thousands of sites with total alleged or potential liabilities in the billions of dollars. Our environmental liability valuation professionals develop and apply customized sophisticated deterministic or stochastic costing tools to prepare estimates consistent with applicable costing standards, such as ASTM 2137-06(2011) for the following types of projects:

Mergers, Divestitures, and Acquisitions

Geosyntec evaluates portfolios ranging in size from single complex sites to hundreds of sites. ELV enables a better understanding and management of environmental liabilities to allow clients to appropriately factor environmental risk into sales prices and transaction documents such as environmental indemnification agreements.

Business Planning and Portfolio Management

Geosyntec helps clients strategically prioritize and allocate resources to remediate sites that pose a high risk of future liability. By focusing on environmental risk, sites with the largest cost escalation potential can be identified and proactive measures can be taken. We also evaluate the merits of available contracting alternatives for remediation projects, as well as risk-sharing alternatives, and develop dynamic tools for clients to continuously update and refine portfolio management strategies.

Insurance-Related Support

Environmental insurance instruments, such as historic comprehensive general liability policies, and newer cleanup cost cap and environmental impairment liability policies have become key components of many business transactions and operations. Our ELV team provides technically-sound and defensible analysis that better positions our clients to negotiate the optimal value of historic and future insurance coverage.

Financial Reporting

Environmental disclosure and related financial reporting requirements have evolved significantly. Geosyntec combines real-world site cleanup and engineering costing experience with a fundamental understanding of standard accounting and cost estimating practices to support our clients' financial reporting needs.

Litigation Support

Geosyntec's nationally-recognized experts in industrial operations, specific contaminants, and site remediation technologies provide technical assistance, expert opinions, and testimony for litigation related to environmental damages and the actual or potential cost to remediate those damages. We provide support for bankruptcy, CERCLA cost recovery and cost allocation, and eminent domain, as well as defense and cost allocation support to counsel for potentially responsible parties at Superfund sites.

Environmental Asset Valuation

Geosyntec helps clients to value environmental assets such as alternative energy project opportunities and carbon emission reduction credits. Our ELV experience was acknowledged by the National Science Foundation, which funded our cutting-edge research to develop numerical modeling tools for quantifying the value of liabilities associated with a portfolio of environmentally impaired properties.
